The Alton College Foundation Award Ceremony took place in the Berkoff Performing Arts Centre on Friday 10th October. This was the first time this event was held in the evening and was a great success, filling the auditorium with Scholars and their parents, Sponsors, College Governors and Staff and Directors and Founder Members of the Foundation.

Prior to the Award Ceremony drinks and canapés were served and music provided by three Scholars, Conor Chaplin, Laura Judd and Martha Russell. This gave good time for everybody to meet and talk in a relaxed environment.

Opening the evening Trevor Heley, Managing Director of the Foundation, thanked all the Sponsors and Staff for their continued support and gave special thanks to Claire Wallace, the former Foundation Administrator, who left in May after four and a half years service and to her successor Sara Nicholls. He then wished all the Scholars well in their next two years at the college reminding them that this was a reward for excellence and 'doing their best' should be their objective in life. He went on to say that the core objective of the Foundation was to raise money to help Students and the College raise standards and to act as a 'Ginger Group' challenging the powers that be to do more to promote excellence.

He added that in these difficult times it was vital to continue to retain the help that existing Sponsors gave and attract new Sponsors. He asked the assembled group to help by either suggesting possible new Sponsors or possibly volunteering to help in fund raising in the future. At the same time he announced that in 2009 a new Bursary scheme would be introduced and he felt that this would enable the Foundation to help a wider group of Students. During the proceedings that followed there was a presentation by Thalia Laing, a 2nd year Scholar, describing how her Scholarship had helped her and what she planned to do in the future. Colin Chaplin and Laura Judd then gave a great rendition of Chick Coreas’s ‘Spain’.

The awards were then give to the Scholars by their Sponsors, this included the presentation by Nicky Branch, Chairman of the Foundation, of his Scholarship and also the Peach Scholarships on behalf of Chris Wilson. The event was closed by Jane Machell, Principal of Alton College, who thanked the Foundation and the Sponsors saying that these awards were of true value to the students. She also thanked the parents for their continued support.
