The Alton College Foundation Award Ceremony took place in the Berkoff Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 5th November. This was the second time that the event had been held here, and the auditorium was filled with Scholars and their parents, Sponsors, College Governors, including the Chair of Governors, Mr Ian Taylor, Principal of Alton College, Jane Machell and Vice Principal, Steve MacCormack.
Prior to the Award Ceremony drinks and canapés were served and music provided by two Scholars, Conor Chaplin (2008/9) and Brad Darnell Hayes (2009/10). This was a good opportunity for everybody to meet and talk in a relaxed environment.
Opening the evening, Trevor Heley, Managing Director of the Foundation, thanked everybody who had missed Guy Fawkes Night to be there, and went on to draw a parallel with Mr Fawkes, who had been considered a scholar at school before being lead astray. He was voted the 30th most popular person of all time in a 2002 BBC poll, which shows a very British attitude towards popularity. He added that he hoped that this year’s Scholars would have a spectacular future and also be remembered, like Guy Fawkes, but not for the same reason.
Mr Heley then thanked all the Sponsors, parents and staff for their continued support, and gave special thanks to Roger Clark, of Alton College, who had helped with the interview process. He then wished all the Scholars well in their next two years at the College, reminding them that this was a reward for excellence and 'doing their best' should be their objective in life. They were the 10% of applicants chosen in a year where the standard of all applications was high.
Next followed a presentation by Carys Redman White, a Veterinary Science Scholar, in which she outlined what she had done both inside and outside College to further her learning and also her enjoyment. She thanked her Sponsors and the Foundation not only for their financial support, but also their encouragement. This was followed by a performance of the song 'Just the two of us' by Scholars Conor Chaplin and Brad Darnell Hayes.
The awards were then presented to the Scholars by their Sponsors. These included, for the first time, the Richard Frankel Memorial Scholarship for Medicine, in memory of the late husband of Merry Frankel, former Chair of Governors at Alton College and now Director of the Foundation.
The event was closed by Jane Machell, Principal of Alton College, who thanked the Foundation and the Sponsors saying that these awards were of true value to the students. She also thanked the parents for their continued support and wished the students a fantastic time at the college.
